The most frequent question I have received from aspiring entrepreneurs is where do I start? The thought of starting a business can be so overwhelming. There are so many people that have given up on their dream because they didn't have any clue where to even begin. Having started more than one business now and being part of more than a few startups I have a tip that will help that initial step seem not as scary. It's simple, the first things you do before anything else, before your business plan, financial plan or raising capital is...make a mind map.
Yes, those simple diagrams that you were taught in school are the first place any entrepreneur should start, especially if they are struggling to get clarity on what it is they are doing or want to do. It sounds childish but it is so helpful. The mind of an entrepreneur is usually creative place with lots of energy and maybe even several business ideas sloshing about in there at the same time. This can be a strength at times but sometimes a weakness. Creating a mind map helps you channel all those ideas and in that process the framework of your business will begin to surface.
If you haven't heard of mind mapping here is a good description: "A mind map is basically a diagram that connects information around a central subject." source: lifehacker
Link and group concepts together through natural associations
Help generate more ideas, find deeper meaning in your subject, and also prompt you to fill in more or find what you're missing
Provide an intuitive way to organize your thoughts, since mind maps mimic the way our brains think—bouncing ideas off of each other, rather than thinking linearly
Once you complete your mind map you are staring at basically the rough draft of your business plan and you can begin to organize yourself from there.
Here is a picture of the mind map that I created for this business. What was most significant to me was a timeline began to emerge of when I should launch certain parts of my new business which has helped me to chart out a path of what needs to happen on order for this timeline to become a reality. It no longer seems daunting, scary or unattainable. I encourage everyone who is about to start a business to make a mind map. You would be amazed at what comes out.
I would love to see you mind maps! I encourage you to post your mid map on your social media and hashtag #tatirivsmindmaps
